Recycle Plus® Recycled Asphalt Pavement

The Recycle Plus® system is an environmentally friendly system that uses SemMaterials' cold mix technology to recycle Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) into new pavements.

What goes into the Recycle Plus system? The system is composed of, but not limited to, four key elements.

  • Materials
  • Design
  • Equipment
  • Technical Support

Depending upon local needs for road rehabilitation and construction, we may also offer other services as part of the Recycle Plus System. Contact your local SemMaterials representative for more information on these services.

Recycle Plus Materials:
The Recycle Plus process uses quality materials designed to give the cold mix asphalt a good coating during processing, workability during placement, and structural integrity of the mix in its end-use on the road. An important part of the Recycle Plus process is the selection of those materials. Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is carefully evaluated for its potential use in Recycle Plus processing. Consistency, aggregate quality, lack of deleterious materials, and environmental acceptability are just some of the criteria used for RAP qualification. SemMaterials' asphalt emulsion products are specifically developed and selected for each Recycle Plus project. The Recycle Plus cold mix asphalt can be placed using available laydown equipment.

Design:
An integral part of the Recycle Plus process is the design of the mixture. Our labs evaluate each RAP to be used for Recycle Plus processing, and design the mixture to meet end-result specifications for coating, return to traffic, strength of laboratory compacted sample of the mix, and retained strength (moisture susceptibility). The Recycle Plus cold mix asphalt is designed for the specific end-use application and the type of paving equipment to be used.

Equipment:
The Recycle Plus process manufactures asphalt cold mixes at a central location using equipment specially designed to provide a consistent gradation for the structural integrity of the mix. The equipment removes foreign materials such as rubberized crackfiller, crushes and sizes the RAP to an acceptable gradation, blends Recycle Plus emulsified asphalt, water and other additives in the proper proportions, and mixes the materials to give an even coating.

Recycle Plus manufacturing is done by Recycle Plus Qualified Contractors who use their experience and quality control to produce mixes that meet the end-result specifications. These materials must be workable during placement, yet cure quickly to strengths which allow return to traffic.

Technical Support:
No Recycle Plus project is completed without extensive technical support. Trained personnel are available on site during the manufacturing process to adjust parameters as needed to ensure the cold mix asphalt meets the Recycle Plus specifications of coating, return to traffic, mixture strength and resistance to moisture. The mix is sampled and tested for quality at regular intervals.

We also offer Reflex® Cold In-Place Recycling. The Reflex system rehabilitates existing pavements by milling, sizing, mixing with ReFlex emulsion, immediately replacing the renewed pavement, compacting, and re-opening to traffic in a continuous operation.

We've had a lot of experience with recycling. Your local SemMaterials representative will be happy to supply further information and help in selecting the right process available in your area for your paving needs.
