Asphalt Emulsion Cold Mixes

SemMaterials plants produce a full line of water based mixing grade asphalt emulsions. These have been engineered for use in a variety of applications including pugmill mixes, recyclingbase stabilization and maintenance mixes. Advances in emulsion technology, including high float and polymer modification, now mean that asphalt emulsions can be used in virtually any asphalt paving application.

Environmentally and Economically Friendly
The water base of emulsified asphalt is non-polluting. Because the emulsions are liquid at room temperature, and the aggregate is not normally heated or dried, fuel and energy are saved. The mixes can be made at remote locations, reducing transportation needs. And the equipment investment is relatively low.

With the correct design, cold mixes can be placed in almost any situation. They are routinely used in pavement construction, rehabilitation and maintenance. The emulsions are compatible with damp aggregates, and there are a variety of emulsions available for use with different aggregates, climatic conditions and job needs. The finished surface can have excellent rideability, strength and durability.

Versatile Construction
The cold mix can be mixed and placed using a variety of methods, including mixing in-place or at a plant. Some of the advantages of each method are listed below.

Method Description Location Advantages
Mixed In-Place
Travel Mixer Self-propelled pugmill that receives aggregate into a hopper, blends in the emulsion, and spreads the mix into a finished mat. Construction site Low transportation costs
Low energy costs
Good control of asphalt content
Best quality in-place finished mat
Rotary Mixer A mixer attached to a self-propelled machine. It simultaneously cuts into the existing aggregate and mixes in the asphalt emulsion Construction site Low transportation costs
Low energy costs
Relatively good control of asphalt content
Good mixing
Effective for low volume applications
Blade Mixing Asphalt emulsion is sprayed onto aggregate on road surface or window.
A motor grader blends and places the mix.
Construction site Low transportation costs
Low energy costs
Less expensive equipment
Simple mixing procedure
Effective for low volume applications
Plant Mix
Cold Mix Plant Consists of a portable pugmill, aggregate storage and a feed hopper.

The mix may be placed using a paver or a blade.

Permanent or portable plant near construction site Low energy costs
Good control of asphalt content
High production rates
Plant is easily moved and may be close to aggregate source and/or construction site
Paver laid material has excellent surface for high volume applications
Blade application is effective for low volume applications

Precautions for Successful Projects
As with any project, correct design, normal good construction procedures and proper emulsion handling will give the best results. We formulate our emulsions for local aggregates, climate, job conditions and performance requirements to make sure your project will be successful. The use of high float technologypolymers or other additives may improve the quality of the finished application. Your local SemMaterials representative can help you with the selection and use of the right emulsion for your project.
