SemMaterials High Performance Chip Seal

Consistent Chip Seal Quality from SemMaterials Emulsion Chemistry combined with Stylink® Polymer Modified Asphalt Technology

A quicker, more reliable break means consistent results. Using a new chemistry for emulsions, SemMaterials Chip Seal Emulsion has been developed to take the guesswork out of chip seal emulsions. The chemicals used to make the emulsion have been specially formulated to 1) give a controlled chemical break and 2) have superior compatibility with Stylink Polymer Modified Asphalt. A chemical break means the emulsion breaks when you want it to, with a stable emulsion in the tank and distributor, and a quicker, more reliable break than conventional chip seal emulsions on the roadway. The superior compatibility means the binder will give both improved early chip retention and longer durability of the chip seal. The end result is a chip seal that gives more predictable and longer lasting results.

Stylink Polymer Modified Asphalt's unique physical properties improve both initial and long-term performance, providing increased service life and cost savings.

Saves Money in the Long Run.
A dollar spent today in preventative maintenance means several dollars will be available tomorrow to tackle those tougher problems. SemMaterials technology comes out ahead in terms of overall cost savings by extending your pavement’s service life. With SemMaterials Emulsion Chip Seals, major highways and other high traffic roads now can be treated with seal coats instead of a hot mix overlay or other higher-cost method. This means more pavement can be maintained during its useful life, instead of waiting until complete reconstruction is necessary.

Many agencies have found they can extend the time intervals between chip seal applications by a minimum of 2 years. At the end of that longer life cycle, there is typically 40% more chip retention. The New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department, for example, feels they are getting more value not only because of the longer life, but because of the better quality. The Stylink significantly reduces the number of broken windshields and virtually eliminates chip loss and bleeding. And the skid resistance with time is better because of the improvement in chip retention.

Benefits of SemMaterials Emulsion Chip Seal

  • Improved early chip retention
  • Reduced bleeding and flushing
  • Better adhesion and elasticity at low temperatures
  • Enables the use of chip seals for high volume roads
  • Energy Savings--no petroleum solvents, and can be used without additional heat
  • Cold materials can be used at remote sites
  • Increased service life of slightly distressed existing pavements. Preventive maintenance is a cost-effective use of highway dollars
